A Woodland Wonderland for Little Adventurers
If you’re looking for a spot where your kids can burn off some energy and soak up a bit of nature, let me introduce you to one of our local treasures: Mardley Heath. Tucked away in Welwyn, this ancient woodland and local nature reserve is the perfect blend of peaceful escape and childhood adventure zone.
First off, the trees here are magic. Not in the Harry Potter sense (although tell that to my 5-year-old, who insists she saw a “fairy tree”), but in the way they practically invite kids to climb, hide behind, or build forts with the fallen branches. There’s just something about Mardley Heath that sparks the imagination. You’ll often see little ones playing “explorers,” building dens, or creating entire worlds in the undergrowth. It’s pure childhood joy.
And don’t worry—it’s not just a tangled forest. There are wide open paths, little clearings, and even a few “secret trails” that seem to loop around like something out of a storybook. One of our favourite games is “Find the Tree With the Face”—a slightly gnarled old oak with a knot that looks suspiciously like a sleepy eye. We’ve named him Toby, and yes, he’s very wise.
The best part? It’s not a manicured, plastic playground. Mardley Heath is the real deal. Mud, sticks, bugs—the whole sensory shebang. And trust me, once your kids are done romping through it all, they’ll sleep like little logs. No screens needed.
Quick tips for Visisting Mardley Heath
- Wellies or sturdy shoes are a must—especially after rain.
- Bring a snack or even a little picnic. There’s a lovely bench area that’s perfect for a juice box break.
- Dogs are welcome too, so the whole family can come along.
- Oh, and don’t forget to check for ticks after—this is real nature, after all!
So, next time the kids are climbing the walls or complaining they’re bored, bundle them up and head to Mardley Heath. Let them get muddy, let them roam, and let them just be kids. You might even find yourself climbing a log or two.
See you out there in the woods!
